PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open Switching Venues For '19, '23 Events

There is not yet a specific date for the tournament because of the PGA Tour revamping its scheduleHamilton Golf & Country Club

The Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Hamilton, Ont., has been "officially named as host" of the PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open in '19 and '23, according to Carol Phillips of the CP. Next year's event will mark the first time since '14 that the event has "not been held at Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ont." Golf Canada was "not able to announce a specific date for the tournament because the PGA Tour is currently revamping its schedule." Speculation has been that the event may "move from its current spot in late July to one in June around the U.S. Open." That may "increase the attractiveness of the event to the game’s biggest stars" (CP, 6/6). SPORTSNET.ca's Damien Cox wrote the new venue is a "much-admired golf course, but on its own it can’t change the fact that the Canadian Open has slipped from a second-tier PGA event to arguably a fourth-tier event over the past 20 years." Played one week after The Open Championship, the Canadian Open has "suffered terribly, particularly from mediocre fields." Only the fact RBC sponsors top golfers like Dustin Johnson has "kept the field from becoming even weaker." Cox: "So something has to change, and that something is clearly the date." Until it is decided when the '19 RBC Canadian Open will be played, it is "impossible to get excited or predict a better future for the tournament" (SPORTSNET.ca, 6/6).
