Giants GM Dave Gettleman announced that he has been "diagnosed with lymphoma and will begin treatment soon." Gettleman in a statement said, "The doctor's outlook for the treatment and the prognosis is positive, and so am I. ... I will continue to work as much as the treatment process will allow" (Bergen RECORD, 6/6). In Newark, Ryan Dunleavy notes if Gettleman "needs to take a step back for his recovery," Giants Assistant GM Kevin Abrams "has 16 years of experience" and was the interim GM after former GM Jerry Reese was fired during the '17 season. There is a school of thought that Abrams "will be groomed to be Gettleman's successor when the day comes" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 6/6).
WINDY CITY ANTHEM: In Chicago, Patrick Finley reports four Chicago-area Democratic U.S. House members are asking Bears Chair George McCaskey "if the team voted for the NFL's new national anthem policy and have requested a meeting with the McCaskey family to discuss free speech issues." Rep. Robin Kelly and three other Illinois democrats -- Rep. Bobby Rush, Rep. Danny Davis and Rep. Jan Schakowsky -- "dated the letter May 30." The representatives "defended the players' right to protest during the anthem." Bears coach Matt Nagy said that McCaskey "has been communicative with his players." Bears LB and NFLPA player rep Sam Acho said that he knows from conversations with McCaskey that he "wasn't trying to appease" President Trump (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 6/6).
BRIGHT HAWAIIAN FOOTBALL DAY: In Honolulu, Dave Reardon reports a Rams preseason game at Aloha Stadium in '19 "remains a possibility, and the Rams have also offered to hold a preseason minicamp in Hawaii this year." But there was "no done deal" as of yesterday, four months after talks "started between the NFL team and the Hawaii Tourism Authority." With training camps "starting in less than two months, that decision would have to come very soon if the agreement includes a Rams minicamp" prior to the '18 season" (HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER, 6/6).
