Fox News Airs Clips Of Eagles Players Praying For Protest Story

Fox News aired a clip showed "pictures of Eagles players kneeling" in the aftermath of President Trump rescinding an invitation to host the Super Bowl-winning team at the White House, but the "majority of the pictures are players kneeling to pray prior to the game and not during the national anthem," according to Eliot Shorr-Parks of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. Eagles TE Zach Ertz, one of the players shown in the clip praying, responded on Twitter: "This can't be serious.... Praying before games with my teammates, well before the anthem, is being used for your propaganda?! Just sad, I feel like you guys should have to be better than this." One picture that has been "circulating online since the news broke" is of former Eagles CB Ron Brooks "kneeling during the national anthem" during a '17 preseason game. During the regular season, however, "no Eagles player took a knee during the national anthem" (NJ.com, 6/5). Deadspin's Timothy Burke writes on Twitter, "Fox News, fresh off broadcasting a number of lies about Jemele Hill, now caught fabricating Eagles player protests by using photos of them praying" (TWITTER.com, 6/5). Christopher Wallace, the Exec Producer of "Fox News @ Night," this morning issued an apology for showing "unrelated footage of players kneeling in prayer" (Mult., 6/5).

MEDIA MONITOR: All three network morning shows today touched on Trump's decision to rescind the Eagles' invitation. ABC's "GMA" teased the story under the headline, "Eagles Uninvited," while NBC's "Today" ran the headline "Sacked!" While not teased at the top of the program, it was mention during the opening segment of "CBS This Morning" and later reported under the headline "Eagles Grounded" (THE DAILY). ABC's Linsey Davis said, "The White House has now rebranded the day as a celebration of America" ("GMA," ABC, 6/5). NBC's Hallie Jackson covered the story live from the White House and said, "It was never going to be smooth sailing for this Eagles visit today" ("Today," NBC, 6/5). NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" delayed discussing the topic until after their first commercial break, but returned from the break with the net's Mike Garafolo reporting on it before returning to the studio with the headline, "White House Cancels Eagles Visit Today" ("Good Morning Football," NFL Network, 6/5).
