MLB Facebook Announcers Put Focus On Viewer Feedback

Yesterday’s game generated about 93,000 interactions from viewers, after reaching 1.2 million the first timeFACEBOOK

Yesterday's Cardinals-Brewers game was shown exclusively on Facebook, and the game commentators "addressed viewers’ remarks more than what was transpiring on the field," according to Dan Caesar of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. It was the kind of "banter that drives social media, and that’s what these Facebook productions are all about." Viewer Debra Arndt posted, "Don’t they have a play-by-play announcer? Nobody is calling the game; they’re just analyzing the viewer comments." Finally, game commentator Dan Plesac got around to "talking about the speed" of P Alex Reyes’ pitches "coming down and addressing the possibility of a physical problem." Meanwhile, Caesar notes Reyes made his highly anticipated return from injury, but Facebook's viewer tracker showed that only 38,500 were watching "when Reyes took the mound in the bottom of the first inning." The audience "grew to 54,500 by the bottom of the fourth, his final inning of work, was at about 50,700 in the top of the eighth inning and peaked at about 64,000 as the game ended" with the Brewers winning 3-2. By comparison, Cardinals RSN FS Midwest is "averaging about 150,000 viewers in the immediate St. Louis area alone for its telecasts of Cards midweek afternoon games this year." Yesterday’s game also "generated about 93,000 interactions from viewers, after reaching 1.2 million the first time" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 5/31).
