Audience Analysis: Derby Lowest Since '12; PGA Tour Up In Charlotte

NBC drew a total audience delivery of 15.0 million viewers for the Kentucky Derby last Saturday, as Justify took home the first leg of the Triple Crown (just under 14.9 million TV, 123,100 on streaming). That is the lowest figure for the Derby since ’12 and down 10% from last year. It was the first time in two years the race had head-to-head competition with the NBA Playoffs.

HELLO CHARLOTTE! CBS drew 2.9 million viewers for the final round of the PGA Tour Wells Fargo Championship last Sunday, which saw Jason Day win by two strokes. That figure is up from the tourney’s record-low figure last year (2.1 million viewers) for Brian Harman’s win when the tournament took place in Wilmington, N.C. This year is even with ’16, when James Hahn won in a playoff. Meanwhile, Golf Channel on Friday drew 544,000 viewers for the second round, which saw Tiger Woods just make the cut. Despite Woods finishing his round just prior to Golf Channel coming on air, that figure is up 33% from last year. Golf Channel on Thursday drew 562,000 viewers as Woods was returning to the event for the first time since ’12. That figure is up 67% over last year.
