Buccaneers Using Parrot To Announce 4th-Round Draft Pick

Zsa Zsa the parrot will be accompanied by her caretaker while helping deliver the draft pickBuccaneers

The Buccaneers' fourth-round pick in the NFL Draft on Saturday "will be delivered to an announcer on the pirate ship at Raymond James Stadium by a parrot," according to Greg Auman of the TAMPA BAY TIMES. The Bucs also have other guests "planned to announce their late-round picks Saturday." The fifth-round pick will come from Lt. Gen. C.Q. Brown, who is Deputy Commander for the U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The sixth-round pick is to be "announced by the girls flag football teams from Plant and Robinson high schools, both of which are defending state champions" (TAMPABAY.com, 4/23). PFT's Mike Florio said the use of a parrot is "another gimmick that will be used to hold interest on a day where the process is necessarily less interesting." He added, "It is an unavoidable part of day three because by the time day three rolls around, really, who is paying attention? Who really cares?" ("PFT," NBCSN, 4/24). CBSSN's Adam Schein said, "I'm all in on this. It's like on the nightly shows years ago; if you have nothing, distract them with animals" ("Time to Schein," CBSSN, 4/23). USA TODAY's Tom Schad wrote the parrot's name is Zsa Zsa, and its announcement will be "arguably the strangest draft-pick reveal." Other NFL teams "will also use out-of-the-box methods to announce their picks, from legendary former players and youth groups to iconic movie characters." The Gold Medal-winning U.S. men's curling team will "announce multiple selections" for the Vikings from a Minnesota curling club. The 49ers will announce "at least one of their Day 3 picks with Chewbacca, R2-D2 and Stormtroopers" from the Star Wars franchise (USATODAY.com, 4/23).

SALUTE TO SERVICE: The Ravens have enlisted Pro Football HOFer Jonathan Ogden and a group of high school football all-stars to "make Day 3 draft picks from the USS Constellation" in Baltimore's Inner Harbor (BALTIMORE SUN, 4/24). The Raiders will "make their Day 3 NFL draft selections from Nellis Air Force Base" in Las Vegas. The selections will be announced by former NFLer Greg Townsend, "as well as Nellis Air Force Base Airmen" and members of the Thunderbirds squadron. Round 6 will "be youth football-themed, with the Raiders inviting 15 children of service members stationed at Nellis Air Force Base to participate in the selections" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 4/24).

THE PICKS ARE IN: The Broncos will announce their fourth and fifth round picks "amid cliff divers and Black Bart's Cave" at the historic Casa Bonita Mexican-themed restaurant in Lakewood, Colo. (DENVER POST, 4/24). Pro Football HOFer Thurman Thomas and the Boys & Girls Club Collaborative of Western New York flag football program will "announce picks from Niagara Falls" for the Bills. Pro Football HOF President David Baker and youth players will announce the Browns' picks from Canton. U.S. Army captain and Bronze Star recipient John Kelly will announce a Steelers pick "from Heinz Field with his service dog." The Titans' picks "will be announced by members of the Tennessee Youth Football League" (ESPN.com, 4/23).
