Source: PGA Tour Close To Bringing Event To Detroit In '19

The PGA Tour has "ramped up negotiations in recent weeks on bringing a tournament to the City of Detroit, and an agreement is believed to be close," according to a source cited by Tony Paul of the DETROIT NEWS. The tournament "likely would debut" in '19, and be "held at Detroit Golf Club, making it the first PGA Tour tournament to be played within the city limits." A "title-sponsor candidate" would be Detroit-based Quicken Loans, which sponsored The National in the DC area from '14-17, but "pulled out after last season’s event." Quicken Loans had told the PGA Tour that its "priority is a tournament in Detroit." It is "unclear exactly which week a Detroit tournament would take place." But a Detroit tournament "would bring the PGA Tour back to Michigan for the first time" since '09, when the "near-collapse of the auto industry pulled the plug on the financial backing of the historic Buick Open, long held at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc." Warwick Hills in September "will host the debut playing" of The Ally Challenge on the PGA Tour Champions (DETROIT NEWS, 4/24). GOLF.com's Jeff Ritter noted Quicken Loans Founder & Chair Dan Gilbert is reportedly "pushing for the new Tour stop to take place in Detroit's city limits to further boost the revitalized city." At least two Tour stops this year -- the Houston Open and The National -- are "being played without title sponsors." The Tour "typically announces its schedule in late summer." No matter "what happens in Detroit, there will be wholesale changes" in '19, as the PGA Championship "shifts to May and the Players Championship moves to March" (GOLF.com, 4/23). GOLF DIGEST's Joel Beall noted the Tour has been "considering pitches from a Detroit group," while organizers who run the Champions' 3M Championship at the TPC Twin Cities have "made their attentions known of gaining a regular tour event"  (GOLFDIGEST.com, 4/23).

SAVE THE DATE: In San Antonio, Roy Bragg noted the "buzz on tour" is that the PGA Tour Valero Texas Open will "move next year to a week before the Masters." While that spot on the calendar is "not great, it’s better than the sub-optimal current spot." For the "last four years, the Valero has been played two weeks after the Masters, seen as a fallow period for golfers who are keen to rest after Augusta." There is also a "good argument that whining over the calendar avoids the real problem, to wit: The AT&T Oaks course is murder." Tournament rules official Mike Lonegan said, “The course is very difficult” (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 4/23).
