Ottawa Arena Talks Progress, But Mayor Wants Melnyk Committment

Talks are "continuing" between local Ottawa groups to get the paperwork done and financing in place so that a downtown arena for the Senators can "become reality with shovels in the ground next year," according to Bruce Garrioch of the OTTAWA SUN. Talks have been "shrouded in secrecy and people are a little nervous because of recent comments" by Senators Owner Eugene Melnyk, who "tossed some cold water on these discussions during three town halls last week with season ticket holders, especially during the second session when he indicated he was having second thoughts and was considering staying in Kanata." There is "still a chance these talks could fall apart and the Senators could remain" at Canadian Tire Centre. Melnyk is "concerned that even though the season ticket base isn't as high as the club wants in Kanata, the Senators have a foundation there" (OTTAWA SUN, 4/20). In Ottawa, Jon Willing in a front-page piece notes Mayor Jim Watson wants Melnyk to "say once and for all whether he's committed to one of the biggest redevelopment projects in the city's history after sensing wishy-washy language from Melnyk." Watson: "My first question is, are you serious? Are you dead serious that you want to continue on with this process? And if he says yes, then great." He added, "If he’s constantly hedging his bets on whether he wants to move or not, he better tell us that because that will really send us back to square one" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 4/20).
