Calgary's Bid For '26 Winter Games In Jeopardy Following City Meeting

Calgary’s pursuit of the '26 Winter Games is "in jeopardy" after a council committee agreed that a "vote is needed on whether to proceed any further with the bid process," according to a front-page piece by Meghan Potkins of the CALGARY HERALD. Committee members yesterday voted 9-1 in favor of "making a decision at the next council meeting on whether to continue pursuing a bid." Councillor Druh Farrell said that she "believed her fellow council members may be ready to 'cut bait' on the idea of hosting" in '26. Yesterday's meeting also "revealed a potentially significant shift in support for the Olympics on council." Councillor Ward Sutherland tweeted that "too many red flags" had emerged. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi left council chambers ahead of yesterday’s vote "due to a scheduling conflict." However, he described Calgary’s bid exploration process as being “in the ditch." Nenshi agreed with some of the concerns, but said that he "hoped council wouldn’t shut down Olympic discussions before a complete financial analysis on hosting the Games is presented in June." If council decides to "continue exploring a bid, it would trigger further discussions about the city’s plans for public engagement and the renewed possibility of a plebiscite on the Olympics" (CALGARY HERALD, 4/11).
