Fox Sports, 23andMe Team Up For World Cup Campaign

After the U.S. failed to qualify for the '18 FIFA World Cup, Fox Sports and the genetic-research firm 23andMe decided to team up to "help soccer enthusiasts select a squad that represents their ancestral origins," according to Anthony Crupi of AD AGE. A 30-second spot called "Root for Your Roots" launched Thursday during FS1's "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," which featured the "exploits of international stars Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Neymar (Brazil) as they're cheered on by their supporters." The campaign was created by Wieden & Kennedy, N.Y., late last summer as a "contingency plan in the event the U.S. team failed to book passage to Russia." Wieden's initial idea was to "target the millions of Americans who don't know where their family tree was originally planted." The spot will air in other FS1/FS2 programming before "making the jump this Saturday to Fox' regional sports networks and the broadcast flagship." The new spot is "slated to air" during Fox' Saturday afternoon broadcast of "UFC's Road to the Octagon" and in the net's "subsequent coverage" of the NASCAR Xfinity Series My Bariatric Solutions 300 at Texas Motor Speedway. From there, the ad will begin "appearing in off-network slots, including a high-profile run" in TNT's NBA doubleheader Tuesday (Celtics-Wizards and Rockets-Lakers). An array of "digital, social and out-of-home executions is in the works, and specially branded in-store display units will appear in Best Buy stores" (ADAGE.com, 4/5).
