MLB Facility Notes: New Scoreboard Highlights Coors Field Additions

Coors Field's new scoreboard will light up the Denver skyline with 6.8 million LED lightsGetty Images

In Denver, Elizabeth Hernandez notes Coors Field's new 8,369-square-foot scoreboard has a "display size equivalent to 784 60-inch televisions." The board will "light up the Denver skyline with 6.8 million LED lights." The Tavern Ballpark on the first level of the rooftop "has been rebranded as the Coors Light Silver Bullet Bar serving more than 25 local and national craft beers." The Club Level Bar on the third base side "has been totally renovated, jutting out onto and enclosing what was an outdoor deck." Left field "now touts a target 'Hit the Mitt sign.'" Each time a Rockies home run hits the sign, UCHealth will "make a $5,000 donation through the Colorado Rockies Foundation to Gold Crown Foundation, a nonprofit that offers youth sports" (DENVERPOST.com, 4/6).

EVERYWHERE A SIGN: In DC, Scott Allen notes one of the "more noticeable changes" to the Nationals Park scoreboard coming into the season is the "mound visit tracker." Several other teams "have altered their scoreboard displays this season to account" for MLB's new pace of play initiative limiting mound visits. Additionally, the team has changed the "font used to display lineups." However, the arched “Nationals” light-up wordmark mounted above the right half of the scoreboard "isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, despite the fact that the Nationals ditched that wordmark for a new one in cursive script" in '11 (WASHINGTON POST, 4/6).

FOR THE KIDS: In Philadelphia, Bethany Ao notes the Yard at Citizens Bank Park is a "new 13,000-square-foot immersive baseball experience" for young fans, designed by Philadelphia-based architecture firm Metcalfe. Additionally, the ballpark's Left Field Plaza has a new food vendor called "Boardwalk Eats." Other new food additions to the ballpark "include P.J. Whelihan's in Ashburn Alley" (PHILLY.com, 4/4).
