MLB Season Preview

Fox RSNs Incorporating Statcast For '18, With Amazon Web As Sponsor

Fox Sports-owned RSNs, including YES Network, this season are rolling out a series of new animation, graphics and use of MLBAM’s Statcast data. MLBAM has already begun working with baseball’s national broadcasters, including ESPN and Fox, on using the advanced data that measures such things as exit velocity and catch probability for fielders. Some of that data is now working its way down to the regional level across Fox Sports' portfolio of 15 MLB teams. But network execs said they will still be measured in the on-air use of such information. Fox Sports Networks Senior VP/Production & Exec Producer Mike Connelly said, "Fifteen teams jumping in like this with Statcast at the regional level is a big step. The big component here is context and making sure we’re doing this properly and that it enhances our storytelling. But we’re excited about the possibilities.” Amazon Web Services, which has aided MLBAM with the development of Statcast and has been a presenting partner with the league for this data, maintains an umbrella sponsorship for the content and will gain the first mention in every Fox RSN game incorporating the data. But beyond that, the individual Fox RSNs are free to sell against Statcast and are now in the market.

BOLDLY GOING: Meanwhile, YES Net has developed a new animation package as part of a larger overhaul of its in-studio and game coverage. The new designs and animation, tying into various N.Y. landmarks, are aimed at creating a more explicit sense of bigness given the heightened on-field expectations for the Yankees this season and fan interest in the club. The new look was developed with Drive Studio, based out of L.A. and San Diego. The design firm has previously worked Fox Sports, NBC Sports, MSG, Showtime and NFL Net, among others.
