Calgary City Councillors Approve Creation Of Olympic BidCo. For '26

Calgary city councillors voted 8-6 to approve a $2.5M (all figures C) "cash injection for the creation of an Olympic BidCo., on the understanding that provincial and federal governments must also come through with matching financial support" for a bid on the '26 Winter Games, according to a front-page piece by Meghan Potkins of the CALGARY HERALD. The decision "green-lights additional funds to complete" Calgary's $9.5M portion for the BidCo. The "proposed draft budget" for BidCo. would include $10.5M from the federal government and $10M from the province, totaling $30M. Councillors yesterday also had the "opportunity to question the city's Olympic project team regarding previously floated figures" for Calgary to host the '26 Games. Calgary Bid Dir Kyle Ripley said, "We're anticipating that number to be higher, we'll have an exact number likely in June." Ripley cited "modifications to Games concept plans and costs associated with inflation for contributing to a likely increase" in the $4.6B figure first cited last summer. Ripley said that creating a BidCo. is "necessary to make progress on answering key questions surrounding hosting another Olympics" (CALGARY HERALD, 3/21). The CP's Donna Spencer noted Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has "repeatedly said a bid can't go ahead without federal and provincial financial support." The IOC will "invite cities to bid" for the '26 Winter Games in October with the "deadline to do so in January." The winning city will be announced in September '19 (CP, 3/20).

THROWING THEIR HAT IN THE RING? The AP reported Milan and Turin are "both in discussions with the Italian National Olympic Committee about possibly bidding" for the '26 Games. The Veneto region that includes Venice, Verona and '56 Games host Cortina d'Ampezzo is "also interested" in '26, with Veneto President Luca Zaia yesterday announcing that interest will be "formalized by next week." Italian Committee President Giovanni Malago "discussed the possible bids during a visit" with IOC President Thomas Bach yesterday in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Italian Committee is "still recovering from its dropped Rome bid" for the '24 Games. Other cities which have "shown preliminary interest" for '26 include Stockholm; Calgary; Sion, Switzerland; and Sapporo, Japan (AP, 3/20).
