Roll With It: PBA Heading To Fox, FS1 After Decades With ESPN

Fox Sports has signed a multiyear deal with the PBA to become the tour's new TV partner starting in '19. Four PBA broadcasts will air on Fox, with 25 more airing on FS1. All programs will be streamed on Fox Sports Go (Fox). VARIETY's Brian Steinberg noted the deal ends the PBA's "decades-long alliance it has enjoyed with ESPN, and a shorter-term relationship it has with CBS Sports Network." The PBA hopes the deal with Fox will "establish a new presence" for bowling on broadcast TV. PBA Commissioner Tom Clark said that deal is "expected to last more than three years" and Fox will "sell advertising and sponsorships for the sport," though he declined to discuss financial terms. Clark: "ESPN was definitely interested in continuing the relationship, and they made their bid and had their opportunity, but it came down to really being an overwhelming easy decision because of the having more shows on broadcast television in the Fox deal. There will be 29 original programs and 58 hours across the Fox platforms, opposed to what this year was about 17 shows and 30 hours on ESPN" (VARIETY.com, 3/20). Fox and the PBA "plan to supplement" on-air coverage with "live-streaming of preliminary rounds by PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel as well as extensive use" of outlets including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and the companies' respective websites (BROADCASTINGCABLE.com, 3/20).
