Finding His Voice: Former Coach John Fox Joins ESPN As NFL Analyst

Former NFL coach John Fox "has been hired by ESPN as an NFL studio analyst," according to Richard Deitsch of THE ATHLETIC. The net has "some studio openings with the departure of Herm Edwards ... and the possibility of some of its studio crew moving" to the "MNF" booth. Fox' "sense of humor could translate well to a studio analyst position with reps and coaching from producers" (THEATHLETIC.com, 3/20). In Chicago, Rich Campbell writes Fox joining the media is "quite a twist, considering he never warmed to media in three seasons as Bears coach." He "alienated local reporters with an unwavering determination to answer questions as vaguely as possible in the name of preserving a competitive advantage" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/21). Fox was "tight-lipped during on-camera interviews about the Bears" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 3/21). He "wasn't known as the most media-friendly coach" during his career, which also included stops with the Panthers and Broncos (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 3/20).

GOOD CALL: Media members lauded the hire on Twitter. Pro Football Talk's Darin Gantt wrote, "I say this without sarcasm. John Fox will be outstanding on television." NFL.com's Judy Battista replied, "Absolutely agree. He'll be funny and pointed." The AP's Joe Reedy: "How John Fox didn’t end up on Fox is truly mystifying." Fox' Laura Okmin: "I can’t wait for all to see how awesome he is. One of the funniest, most fun, coaches in the league and finally gets to show it." Buffalo-based WGR-AM's Mike Schopp: "The total package of cleverness and charisma, sure to be a must-watch. 'Did you hear what John Fox said?' -- everyone, Fall 2018."
