AL PACINO said of the appeal of playing JOE PATERNO in HBO's upcoming "PATERNO" film, "It was an opportunity to play a tragic character, one who got thrown all of these things and had to cope in this world that he's in, and deal with what happened." Pacino noted HBO came to him with the role "five years ago." Pacino: "It took time. I didn't think we were going to do it." On the sexual abuse scandal that is depicted in the film, Pacino said, "It's disturbing -- let's put it that way -- more than depressing" (INQUIRER.net, 3/18).

CLOSE CALL: When CSE's JASON WOOD was fired by his agency in January, a "frenzy of agents pursued" his former client -- Red Sox LF ANDREW BENINTENDI. In the end, Benintendi chose Excel Sports Management's CASEY CLOSE. Benintendi said Close was "just someone I could kind of relate to, who was laidback." Benintendi: "It was just a matter of who I felt comfortable with the most. I think it went as well as it could have" (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 3/17).

ON THE HUNT: Georgia employed Collegiate Sports Associates, run by former Vanderbilt AD TODD TURNER, during its men's basketball coaching search that led to the hiring of TOM CREAN. UGA AD GREG MCGARITY said of Turner, "He knew who was in play and who wasn't in play. These guys know the landscape out there and they know who's movable and who's not" (ONLINEATHENS.com, 3/16)....Colorado State enlisted EDDIE FOGLER’s Fogler Consulting for a $25,000 fee to help in the school's men’s basketball coaching search (DENVERPOST.com, 3/16).

NAMES: A regional group is “studying how and whether Minnesota should try to attract major cultural, arts and sports events more often.” Among the ideas being considered is to “establish an oversight agency or association -- possibly funded by tax dollars -- to attract, plan and operate them.” Minnesota Gov. MARK DAYTON said, “This idea certainly deserves serious consideration. We want Minnesota to hold major national events on a regular basis” (STARTRIBUNE.com, 3/18)....Eagles S CHRIS MARAGOS, LB JORDAN HICKS and Bears TE TREY BURTON recently launched TopTier Wealth Management to help “mentor players so they don’t lose” their earnings. For a minimum $500,000 investment, people can have their money “managed by TopTier, which aims to handle finances for a dozen of so” NFLers and about 80 other players and families. Burton, Hicks and Maragos “declined to say how much in assets” TopTier is managing, but the operations will be “based in Grand Rapids, Mich.” However, they could “potentially open an office in Philadelphia” (PHILLY.com, 3/19)....VENUS WILLIAMS will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker at the Oklahoman’s All-City Prep Sports Awards set for June 26 (NEWSOK.com, 3/17)....Rams QB JARED GOFF and Jaguars QB BLAKE BORTLES yesterday attended the BNP Paribas Open final and were “not far” from tournament Owner LARRY ELLISON in the Champions Box (DESERTSUN.com, 3/18)....Arizona State football coach HERM EDWARDS on Friday flew in the back seat of a F/A-18 Hornet with the Blue Angels at Luke Air Force Base (AZCENTRAL.com, 3/16).
