Two USA Swimming Leaders Out Amid Sexual Abuse Investigation

USA Swimming Safe Sports Dir SUSAN WOESSNER on Thursday was forced out "amid allegations she had a conflict of interest when she was involved with a sexual abuse investigation" of national team coach SEAN HUTCHISON because of an "alleged 'intimately personal relationship' with the coach," according to a front-page piece by Scott Reid of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. USA Swimming Managing Dir for Club Development PAT HOGAN on Thursday was also "forced out." Woessner and Hogan's departures come just days after an investigation "revealed how USA Swimming allowed sexually abusive coaches and officials to remain in the sport." The investigation found that Woessner, late USA Swimming Exec Dir CHUCK WIELGUS and other top officials, board members and coaches were "aware of sexually predatory coaches for years, in some cases even decades, but did not take action against them." USA Swimming, along with USA Gymnastics and USA Taekwondo, is "currently being investigated by a Congressional committee looking into how the organizations have handled sexual abuse cases." While acknowledging a "brief physical encounter with Hutchison, Woessner denied any impropriety in her resignation letter" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 2/23). USA TODAY's A.J. Perez notes the news came the same day USA Swimming CEO & President TIM HINCHEY "sent a letter to clubs and members of the organization, emphasizing USA Swimming is 'doing everything we can to make sure' abuse never happens again" (USA TODAY, 2/23).
