Audience Analysis: NBA All-Star Events Mixed; PGA Tour Rebounds

TNT and TBS combined to average 7.65 million viewers for the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night, well above the figure from four years ago, when it last had primetime Olympic competition. TNT alone four years ago averaged 7.51 million viewers up against the Sochi Games on NBC. When the Olympics were live in primetime in '10, the NBA ASG averaged 6.85 million viewers. Last year, the ASG, which aired up against the midseason premiere of "The Walking Dead," averaged 7.75 million viewers. With the same competition in '16, the ASG averaged 7.61 million viewers. Sunday's game peaked at 8.2 million viewers from 9:15-9:30pm ET. This year's game also saw upticks across all key demos, including a spike of 10% among males 18-34. Meanwhile, NBA All-Star Saturday Night, which had the the skills challenge, 3-point contest and slam dunk competition up against Olympic coverage, drew its smallest audience since ’05. The 4.7 million viewers this year were down from 5.6 million viewers last year, and down from 5.7 million viewers in ’14, when the event last had Olympic competition. Friday night’s Rising Stars game fared better for the NBA. The game averaged 1.4 million viewers, marking the game’s best audience since 1.6 million viewers in ’15. On social media, NBA All-Star weekend set a new record with 521 million views across its social media platforms, up 19% from ’17. Jazz G Donovan Mitchell, who won the dunk contest, was the player who saw the most social media growth over All-Star weekend, with his Twitter following up 11% and Instagram up 31%. A compilation of Mitchell’s dunks from the contest drew over 3.6 million views on Facebook.

BACK ON THE FAIRWAY: After a rough start to the ’16-17 PGA Tour season, which saw almost all tournaments see declines for final round coverage, CBS’ coverage has rebounded well this season. For the Tour’s West Coast swing, which featured the Farmers Insurance Open, Waste Management Phoenix Open, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Open, CBS averaged 3.2 million viewers, up 10% from the same tourneys last season.
