The AP's Ralph Russo reports ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit will "take Jon Gruden's place on ESPN's coverage" of the NFL Draft. ESPN today announced that Herbstreit will be "part of the opening night coverage of the first round" in primetime on April 26 at AT&T Stadium. He will be "joined by host Trey Wingo, draft analyst Mel Kiper and NFL analyst Louis Riddick." Herbstreit said of his new role, "I'm going to stay in my lane and let Mel and Louis and Trey kind of say, 'Hey, the Broncos really need to do this.'" He added, "I'm hoping to bring a little bit of the intangibles and what makes this particular guy tick" (AP, 2/22).

MOTHER LOAD: DEADLINE's Patrick Hipes noted Fox will "air 38 games live on the broadcast network" as part of its coverage of the FIFA World Cup in Russia, which is "more than the previous four World Cups combined and the most ever for an English-language network." In all, the net will "air more than 350 hours of programming." FS1 will "air an additional 26 matches, and all 64 games will be live-streamed via Fox Sports Go and Fox Soccer Match Pass" (DEADLINE.com, 2/20).

SPEAKING THEIR MINDS: In Massachusetts, Christopher Smith noted Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy on Tuesday appeared on WEEI-FM's "Kirk & Callahan" show and "discussed the statement he made to the Boston Herald about his 'growing level of concern with WEEI.'" Red Sox games are broadcast on WEEI, and Kennedy said, "We get frustrated from time to time with our partners. Whether it's WEEI-Entercom, or another partner. And we feel free to speak up when we get disappointed." He added of the recent controversies at the station, "When people go over the line ... we feel we have an obligation to speak up because we hear from, most important to me, is our employees" (MASSLIVE.com, 2/20).

STAYING UNDER THE CAP: In L.A., Stephen Battaglio noted Sinclair Broadcast Group has told the FCC that it will divest the N.Y., Chicago and San Diego TV stations it "plans to acquire from Tribune Media in order to meet the government's ownership limit on broadcast outlets." Sinclair has "already received interest from the Fox Television Group in acquiring some of its stations" that are in markets with NFL teams such as Seattle. The FCC filing shows Seattle is "included in the markets where Sinclair plans to divest stations" (L.A. TIMES, 2/22).
