Sherman Defends Marlins' Firesale, Preaches Patience To Fans

The Marlins yesterday held their first full day of Spring Training, and the team's new ownership has "a plan," something former Owner Jeffrey Loria "never" had, according to Greg Cote of the MIAMI HERALD. The plan demands a "leap of faith," as it is one that will "see lots of losing in the meantime as a club reboots and grows from the bottom up." It has "no guarantees," but it "is a plan, at least." Marlins Owner Bruce Sherman said, “I understand fans have been disappointed in some of the trades. But we are building something sustainable. Patience, patience” (MIAMI HERALD, 2/20). In Miami, Clark Spencer notes Sherman "defended the series of high-profile trades in which the Marlins let go" of Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, Dee Gordon and Christian Yelich. Sherman said, “The management team has made all the right moves.” Sherman also "vowed he isn’t a silent partner" with CEO Derek Jeter. He said, “I’ve been involved in every decision. I support every decision. I know the partners support every decision. We’re building something for the long haul here” (MIAMI HERALD, 2/20). In Ft. Lauderdale, Tim Healey notes Sherman "wanted to set the record straight." He said that his ownership group "has enough money." There is a perception around MLB that the team is a "bit strapped for cash." But Sherman said, “There’s nothing further from the truth. We are a very sophisticated, well-heeled, financially set organization, not just for this year but for many, many years to come." He added, “Nobody is in this to make any short-term profits whatsoever. This is a long, long haul” (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 2/20).

PAYING TRIBUTE: The SUN SENTINEL's Healey notes the Marlins ordered dozens of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School baseball caps for "players and field staff to wear Friday" before their Grapefruit League opener against the Cardinals, in "support of the school following last week’s mass shooting." The Marlins "plan to wear them during their normal morning workout and pregame activities." MLB has "strict rules about uniforms, so it seems unlikely" that the hats will be "on the field" for the game itself (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 2/20). Meanwhile, in Miami, Jordan McPherson notes the NHL Panthers on Saturday began wearing helmet decals and jersey patches to "pay tribute to the victims" (MIAMI HERALD, 2/20).
