MLB Franchise Notes: Mets' Alderson Hints At Possible Successor

In N.Y., Kristie Ackert notes Mets GM Sandy Alderson "may not know when he plans to step down," but he has "hinted at who he thinks should step into the role once he does." Alderson yesterday while appearing on SNY "endorsed assistant GM John Ricco." He said that Ricco "will be a good GM someday." Alderson: “He understands the field side as well as the office side. There is a tremendous respect among those working with the Mets and throughout baseball. I think John at some point will do a great job” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/20).

MODEL OF SUCCESS: In Houston, Brian Smith noted Astros Owner Jim Crane already knows his team is "in a very good place as a new season begins" as the Astros are "set up to be annual World Series contenders for years." Crane said, "We're set for a good season. Hopefully get in the playoffs and anything goes." Smith noted other teams are now "following the path the Astros were widely criticized for during their early rebuilding years." Crane said, "What's happening in baseball is, some of the information that we're able to accumulate now just allows you to make better decisions and make better investments, as you would in any business." He added, "There's still a lot of money to go around in baseball, and I think you're just kind of in a little anomaly, and things will break up here a little bit and a lot more guys will sign here pretty soon" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 2/18).

STICKING TO HIS WORD: In Pittsburgh, Kevin Gorman noted Pirates Owner Bob Nutting yesterday "spoke to the team before the first full-squad workout of spring training," and his message "didn't change despite a tumultuous offseason." Pirates GM Neal Huntington said, "Bob's message to the team was, in my hearing, similar to messages he's given in the past: 'We're here to win.'" Pirates players had "openly questioned the direction of the franchise and criticized its communication and commitment to winning" after trading P Gerrit Cole to the Astros and CF Andrew McCutchen to the Giants last month (TRIBLIVE.com, 2/19).
