Media Notes

In N.Y., Frank Isola noted ESPN’s Doris Burke is the "broadcasting recipient of this year’s Curt Gowdy Media Award." Burke is one of the "few analysts versatile enough to call NBA, WNBA, men’s and women’s college basketball." One of her "first broadcasting jobs was as a fill-in on radio for Knicks games." Meanwhile, L.A.-based Andy Bernstein became the "first photographer to win the print version of the Curt Gowdy Award." The award, which last year went to N.Y. Times columnist Harvey Araton, had "always been given to a writer" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/18). SportsBusiness Journal this week profiles female broadcasters, including Burke, who are making their mark in the NBA (THE DAILY).

BACK ISSUES: GOLFWEEK's Martin Kaufmann wrote CBS golf analyst Ian Baker-Finch had a "dismal performance" this weekend at the PGA Tour Genesis Open. Baker-Finch on two occasions Saturday "speculated, with no evidence, that Patrick Cantlay’s swing indicated he was experiencing back pain." But on-course reporter Peter Kostis, a swing instructor, told Baker-Finch that Cantlay’s swing on the 17th tee was "fine and that he was leaning because his drive was going right." Cantlay had a "serious back injury at the start of his pro career." But for Baker-Finch to "suggest, with no evidence, that an imperfect swing or body English were signs of back pain was irresponsible" (GOLFWEEK.com, 2/18).

DIAMOND MINE: In Philadelphia, Jeff Blumenthal wrote while print publications and even some digital outlets have "scaled back their baseball coverage, The Athletic has jumped in with both feet." The publication hired longtime baseball writers Ken Rosenthal and Peter Gammons, former GM Jim Bowden, analytics expert Eno Sarris and SI's Emma Span to "edit the coverage." Last week, it landed former ESPN writer Jayson Stark. The site also "announced regular coverage" of 20 of the 30 MLB clubs this season. But the baseball focus "seems counter-intuitive to the direction of the sports media landscape," as it is "prohibitively expensive to cover compared to other sports" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 2/16).
