Medal Stand: Games Officially Open With Marvelous Show

Each day during the Olympics, THE DAILY offers our take on the business performances of some of the people, sponsors, broadcasters and other entities around Pyeongchang.

GOLD: PYEONGCHANG'S OPENING -- True to form, Friday’s Opening Ceremony perfectly blended tradition with technology for a fantastic show.

SILVER: VISA EVERYWHERE LOUNGE -- The longtime Olympic sponsor managed to secure luxury space at the Games, where that’s few and far between, for its showcase lounge. The space is smaller and a bit more modest than Rio’s but features spectacular views along with all of Visa’s bells and whistles.

BRONZE: NBC -- The U.S. rights holder has a massive amount of coverage planned, along with expectations of more than $900M in national ad sales. It’s also been selling on a Total Audience Delivery basis, but there’s still the question of whether the first of three straight Asian Games will bring in the viewers.

TIN: SHANI DAVIS -- We appreciate that he wanted to carry the American flag during the Opening Ceremony, and that the two-time Gold Medal winner probably deserved to. But taking your tantrum to Twitter was not exactly the Olympic spirit, nor the class of someone on the level of a flag bearer.
