Lions Front Office Wants Changes To NFL's Hiring Process Rules

Quinn said the NFL has done a poor job managing the hiring of coaches from teams still in the playoffsGETTY IMAGES

Lions execs would like to see the NFL "adjust its antiquated rules regarding the hiring process" after the team's long wait to formally introduce new coach Matt Patricia and "seeing how patiently following NFL protocol backfired" for the Colts, according to Justin Rogers of the DETROIT NEWS. Lions GM Bob Quinn said, "Huge distraction, huge frustration, not only from an organizational level, but with all the candidates, the others teams. I think the league has done a poor job on managing this." Lions President Rod Wood added, "I understand the rationale about not wanting to disrupt the season of somebody in the playoffs, but I think there's a way to have both sides be happy -- have the coach focused on winning the playoffs and have the other team they're going to maybe join, prepare for the season and start to build a staff and everything else. I hope that they revisit that rule. There was some consideration, last year, to do it. If they brought it up again, I'd be in favor of it." Quinn "echoed those sentiments." Quinn: "I would hope it passes this year, because I don't think any team should have to go through this or what's going on with (Indianapolis). That's a really awful situation" (DETROIT NEWS, 2/9). MLIVE.com's Kyle Meinke noted Quinn did not "mince words" when criticizing the rules of the NFL's hiring process. Quinn: "Stupid league rule. It's just ridiculous" (MLIVE.com, 2/8).

COST OF SUCCESS: The DETROIT NEWS' Rogers reports the price increases on Lions tickets for the '18 season will "vary by seat location, but on average, jumps" 3.4%. The "biggest increases are for the stadium's best seats -- in the lower bowl between the 30-yard lines." Fans in those sections will be paying 18.2% more in '18, while "more than 10,000 of the stadium's seats will see increases" of less than 1%. The average Lions ticket will cost $103, which "continues to rank in the bottom quartile, and well below league-average" (DETROIT NEWS, 2/9).
