Not Going Anywhere: Joseph, Jackson Among Coaches On Hot Seat Staying With Teams

Broncos coach Vance Joseph "will be back" in '18 "despite a 5-11 record in his first season," according to Nick Kosmider of the DENVER POST. It is "unclear how much the clear support of the players in Denver’s locker room factored into the decision to keep Joseph," but those who wanted Joseph to stay "got their wish" (DENVER POST, 1/2). By retaining Joseph, Broncos Exec VP/Football Operations & GM John Elway spared the franchise a "fourth head coaching change in five years and provided a significant cost savings." Had Joseph left, the Broncos "could have had to pay the remaining salaries of most of two coaching staffs" (DENVER POST, 1/2). In Colorado Springs, David Ramsey writes Elway early in his front-office tenure was "magnificent," but for the past two years, he has "not even approached mediocrity." Elway "must prove himself again as a roster builder," while Joseph must "prove he's a worthy head coach in the fall" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 1/2).

DOCTOR HUE: In Cleveland, Terry Pluto reported Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam gave coach Hue Jackson "yet another vote of confidence, insisting he'll return as coach" in '18. Haslam is "doubling down on Jackson" despite his 1-31 record in two years. Pluto wrote he has no doubt new Browns GM John Dorsey "will work hard with Jackson to build a roster," though he would "love to know what the general manager really thinks of his new coach after watching the last four games since he took over" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 1/1). In Toledo, Dave Briggs wrote despite Haslam’s insistence otherwise, the "reasonable next course" is for Jackson to "follow the old front office out the door." In a sport in which alignment between the front office and the coaching staff is "important, it makes no sense to not allow" Dorsey to hire his own coach (Toledo BLADE, 1/1).

A BUNCH OF MULARKEY: In Nashville, Joe Rexrode writes questions revolving around Titans coach Mike Mularkey's job status did "not go away" despite the team reaching the playoffs this season. Mularkey has "instilled professionalism and accountability" in the franchise. Rexrode: "'Culture' may be an overused word in sports, but it does mean something." Denying Mularkey the third and final year on his deal and an opportunity to "turn some things around --and keep some things going -- would be a needless risk" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 1/2).

GETTING A REPRIEVE: In Tampa, Rick Stroud writes the fact that Buccaneers ownership "decided to stick with" coach Dirk Koetter after a disappointing 5-11 season was a "surprise to many." Koetter said, "I am very appreciative of the Glazer family that they're going to give me and my staff the opportunity to come back and fix the things we didn't do good enough his year" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 1/2). Also in Tampa, Tom Jones writes bringing Koetter back is the "right move," as it gives the franchise "stability and consistency" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 1/2).

NOTHING TO REPORT YET: Bengals coach Marvin Lewis talked to team Owner Mike Brown about his future with the team yesterday, but they "reached no conclusions and planned more discussions." Lewis' contract expired after Sunday's game, and he said that he has "no interest into moving into a front office job." Paul Brown Stadium was "half-empty" for the team's last home game against the Lions and fans are "calling for change" (AP, 1/1).
