Giants Fire McAdoo, Reese Amid Fallout From Manning Benching, 2-10 Record

The NFL Giants this morning fired coach Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese "following a tumultuous week" that started with the benching of QB Eli Manning, according to Rapoport & Kinkhabwala of NFL.com. The Giants are 2-10, and team President & CEO John Mara last week said that changes "could be coming, adding there were 'no guarantees' that McAdoo would last through the end of the season" (NFL.com, 12/4). NFL Net's Aditi Kinkhabwala cites a source as saying that the Giants will have Steve Spagnuolo take "over as head coach and Kevin Abrams as GM the rest of the way." The "irony in what's happening" is that McAdoo "was NOT" Reese's choice as coach when the Giants made the hire before last season. Reese "liked two other candidates more" (TWITTER.com, 12/4).

NO TIME TO WASTE: The MMQB's Albert Breer reports Mara's "anger over last week was obvious to those around the organization over the last week." Mara was "'furious' over the damage done to the team's image in the wake of the Manning benching" (TWITTER.com, 12/4). ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Mara and co-Owner Steve Tisch “deviated from a public statement” last week that the team would address the status of McAdoo “at the end of the year.” ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes the Giants have three home games left on their schedule, and there wasn’t “any way that that ownership group and this organization intended to bring Ben McAdoo back for three games, where the fan reaction would be as hostile and as negative as it was going to be” (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 12/4). NFL Network's Kim Jones notes Mara and Tisch “are well aware how upset their fan base." They heard "from thousands – thousands! – of Giants fans last week in the wake” of Manning being benched. Jones: “That was an unpopular move among the fan base. This is a fan base that is vocal, sometimes by staying away. Empty seats are the most devastating way that they can show their disapproval with the franchise" ("Good Morning Football," NFL Network, 12/4). Fox’ Jay Glazer reported the Giants "weren't prepared for the reaction outside of that organization" to the Manning benching. There was "so much anger and so many angry phone calls and e-mails from sponsors, season-ticket holders, different fans there.” There also was a group of ex-players that was "planning to go to next week's Cowboys-Giants game, about 25 guys, that are hoping to go on the sidelines, all donning an Eli Manning Jersey in support of Eli" (“Fox NFL Sunday,” 12/3).

DEVOID OF TALENT ON ROSTER
: In N.Y., Pat Leonard notes the Giants under Reese have "missed the playoffs five of the past six seasons primarily due to his mismanagement of the roster and draft." Only 10 of Reese’s 43 draft picks from '10-15 "remain on the team." Now it is "time for Mara to accept the blame for this mess that ultimately lies at his own feet." He fired former coach Tom Coughlin and "hired McAdoo but kept Reese in the GM seat" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 12/4). The N.Y. POST notes Reese has "provided too many draft busts in recent seasons." The team entered '17 "with sky-high expectations, but instead have been the league’s most disappointing team at 2-10" (NYPOST.com, 12/4).
