Michigan State AD Mark Hollis Proposes Bringing PK80-Like Event To Lucas Oil Stadium

Michigan State AD Mark Hollis is "tossing around the idea" of playing a college basketball event at Lucas Oil Stadium similar to last weekend's PK80-Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, only with "multiple games happening simultaneously," according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com. Hollis, who came up with the idea for Knight's tourney, said that the "hope is to continue the 16-team, two-bracket concept, but do it every three or four years." Hollis said that Nike's 50th anniversary is in '21, but he "doesn't know that it's necessary to attach the event to the shoe company again." Hollis: "If you do it, you do it for what's good for college basketball, and this event was proven to be good for college basketball." Hollis said that his vision for an event at Lucas Oil Stadium, which "hasn't even reached the dialogue stage, would also have two games going at the same time, but fans wouldn't have to leave the building -- as they did" for Knight's tourney in Portland. Hollis: "You'd have massive curtains, and 30 or 40 rows of bleachers to keep most of the sound. The only thing to worry about is whistles and horns. There hasn't been any deep-dive thought about this yet. ... I don't want people to jump to the conclusion that this will be done" (ESPN.com, 11/28). NBCSPORTS.com's Rob Dauster wrote the key is going to be "getting enough good teams to populate the event that it matters." That has "not been talked about enough" regarding PK80. The title games for the event "might as well have been the Champions Classic Part II: Michigan State vs. North Carolina and Duke vs. Florida." An event like that, like the one that Hollis is "currently dreaming of launching, is only going to be as good as the teams that show up to play" (NBCSPORTS.com, 11/28).
