NFL Week 10 Overnights: Cowboys-Falcons Leads On Fox, But All Windows See Decrease

The NFL yesterday saw a decrease in ratings for all four of its Week 10 windows. Fox' Cowboys-Falcons telecast in the 4:25pm ET window (89% of markets) led the day with a 14.6 overnight, down 18% from a 17.8 for Cowboys-Steelers in Week 10 last year (92% of markets). Fox also drew an 8.0 overnight for its regional coverage, down 23% from a 10.4 rating in that window last year. The Patriots’ 41-16 win over the Broncos on “SNF” earned an 11.5 overnight on NBC, down 20% from last year’s Seahawks-Patriots Week 10 Sunday night game. Patriots-Broncos peaked at a 13.4 rating between 9:00-9:30pm ET and won the night for NBC in primetime. Boston led all markets for “SNF” with a 34.7 local rating, followed by Denver with a 33.8. Meanwhile, CBS drew an 8.1 rating for its singleheader window yesterday afternoon, down 2% from an 8.3 overnight last year. Steelers-Colts was the highlighted game for CBS yesterday (Josh Carpenter, Assistant Editor).

UNFAMILIAR FACES
: SI.com's Jimmy Traina noted ratings for ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" are "down big," and a lot of people may have "underestimated how much viewers liked Chris Berman and Tom Jackson." This is Berman's first year off the show after hosting it for 31 years, and "whether you liked him or not, Berman was a legend, an iconic figure who people recognized and felt comfortable seeing on their televisions." Traina: "You can't knock ESPN for trying to put together a younger cast, but the new crew ... is just blah" (SI.com, 11/10).

INSIDE TECHNIQUE: Panthers TE Greg Olsen will serve as a guest analyst for next week's Rams-Vikings game on Fox, and in St. Paul, Charley Walters wrote Olsen's appearance was "protested by the Vikings on Saturday." Vikings GM Rick Spielman "wasn’t thrilled about Fox’ decision to allow Olsen an inside look at the Vikings before his team plays them" on Dec. 10 (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 11/12).

NOTHING PERSONAL, JUST BUSINESS: Following Bob Costas' recent comments on the future of football, an NBC Sports spokesperson said Costas' opinions "do not represent those" of the network. In N.Y., Bob Raissman wrote, "Throwing Costas under the bus was a strategic business move." It is a "strong message from NBC that it stands shoulder-to-shoulder, so to speak, with the NFL." This also "qualifies as a warning shot" to NBC's Cris Collinsworth, Al Michaels, Dan Patrick, Mike Tirico and others: "Watch what you say about our properties." Raissman: "Yet is it just a coincidence that NBC pulls the rug out from under Roberto when he has minimal on-air NFL presence and also has stepped down from his primetime Olympics gig?" There is "no doubt the NFL takes precedence over everything" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/12).
