In DC, Isabelle Khurshudyan reports Capitals LW ALEX OVECHKIN announced via an Instagram post the "creation of a social movement in support" of Russian President VLADIMIR PUTIN that he is labeling the "Putin Team." Ovechkin said, "I’m certain that there are many of us that support Vladimir Putin. Let’s unite and show everyone a strong and united Russia." Following a win over the Islanders on Thursday night, Ovechkin "explained why he decided on this public show of support for Putin." Ovechkin: "I just support my country, you know? That’s where I’m from, my parents live there, all my friends. Like every human from different countries, they support their president." He added, "It’s not about political stuff." Russia will hold a presidential election in March, and though Putin "hasn’t formally announced he will seek re-election, he’s expected to seek a new six-year term." In an '11 interview, Ovechkin "admitted to being so close to Putin that he had a 'home number' for the president, and the two were often seen together this summer" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/3).

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES: Lightning Owner JEFF VINIK on Friday discussed his partnership with BILL GATES on a $3B redevelopment project in Tampa, which is intended to create thousands of jobs in the region. Vinik said Tampa is a "great place to live" and a "great place to invest." Vinik: "It's historically been overlooked. People haven't realized what a great place it is. ... The secret is getting out, Tampa's a great place to be" ("Squawk Box," CNBC, 11/3).

NAMES: HBO's BRYANT GUMBEL has been named this year's recipient of the NFLPA Georgetown Lombardi Award. Gumbel will be presented with the honor at the 31st Annual Lombardi Gala on Nov. 18 in DC (NFLPA)....WNBA Washington Mystics F ELENA DELLE DONNE and girlfriend AMANDA CLIFTON are set to be married this weekend (NYPOST.com 11/1).
