College Facility Notes: Neyland Stadium $340M Renovation To Start In Summer '18

In Knoxville, Rachel Ohm in a front-page piece reports a $340M renovation of the Tennessee's Neyland Stadium now includes "additional funding for improvements to the south end of the stadium and enhancements of the fan experience." An overview of the project is "slated to be discussed" by the Tennessee BOT this week. Construction on the first phase of the renovations is scheduled to start in summer '18 "pending approval from the board and the State Building Commission." This is the "first time a total cost estimate for the project has been made public." The $340M figure includes a $74M increase from "projected costs for Phase I of the project." Phase I was "originally estimated" to cost $106M (Knoxville NEWS SENTINEL, 11/2).

PLAINS & SIMPLE: In Birmingham, James Crepea noted Auburn AD Jay Jacobs is "scheduled to seek final project approval" from the school's BOT for a new video board in the North end zone of Jordan-Hare Stadium and a "new equestrian barn, as well as approval of project architects for player development facilities for baseball and softball and renovated locker rooms for men's and women's basketball." If approved, the various projects "would then go to a vote of the full board." The proposed 34,000-square-foot video board is "still budgeted to cost" $6.3M (AL.com, 11/1).

WALKING IN MEMPHIS: Memphis AD Tom Bowen said that construction on the football team's new indoor practice facility "will begin" in January. Bowen said that the project, which has been in the works for more than five years, is "'fully funded now' and a January start date was set in order to not conflict with" the school's current football season. In Memphis, Mark Giannotto notes the facility will be "located on the easternmost part of the football team’s practice fields." It will "include a 120-yard climate-controlled turf field, with retractable doors allowing it to connect with the neighboring outdoor field" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 11/2).
