MLB Sees Fourth Attendance Decline In Last Five Seasons, Falls Below 73 Million Fans

MLB ended the '17 regular season with a total attendance of 72.67 million, down slightly (-0.7%) from last year and the fourth decline at the gate in the last five seasons. The figure is also the lowest since '03, when the Nationals had not yet relocated from Montreal, and breaks a pattern during the '09-16 seasons, where MLB stayed within a tight range of 73-75 million fans per season. The decline also brought MLB below 30,000 in average attendance for the first time since '03. The Dodgers again led individual clubs, pacing the league for a fifth straight year with a total of 3.77 million, while the Rays again ranked last with a total of 1.25 million. The Braves with the opening of SunTrust Park had the largest increase, boosting its total by 24% to 2.51 million. The Royals had the largest decline, falling by 13% to 2.22 million. Thirteen clubs topped 2.5 million in home attendance this season, up from 12 last year. The Dodgers, Cardinals, Giants, Blue Jays, Cubs, Yankees and Angels again were MLB’s only clubs to reach 3 million fans, the same seven teams to do so last year.
