Audience Analysis: "Sunday Night Baseball" Up For '17; Tour Championship Down Slightly

ESPN wrapped up its slate of “Sunday Night Baseball” games last weekend, and for the ’17 season, the net saw an 8% increase in average viewership. For 26 games, ESPN averaged 1.73 million viewers, up from 1.6 million last season. But ’17 was down from 1.8 million viewers two seasons ago. Fueling the year-over-year gains in ’17 was the season-opening Cubs-Cardinals matchup (3.62 million viewers), which marked the best “SNB” audience since the ’11 season. WatchESPN also saw solid “SNB” gains this season, as the average minute audience for streams was up 32% (33,000 vs. 25,000).

LAST HOLE: NBC drew 2.46 million viewers for the Tour Championship last Sunday, which saw Xander Schauffele win the PGA Tour finale by one stroke over Justin Thomas, who at the same time won the FedExCup Playoffs. That figure is down from 2.54 million viewers for Rory McIlroy’s win at the event last year, but up from 2.4 million viewers for Jordan Spieth’s win two years ago.

The chart below lists final audience figures from select recent sports telecasts.
