San Diego County Credit Union Bids $500,000 For Naming Rights To Qualcomm Stadium

San Diego County Credit Union has bid $500,000 "for the naming rights" to the former Qualcomm Stadium, and the City Council is "scheduled to vote on the change Tuesday," according to a front-page piece by Roger Showley of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The three other bidders were Gemini Sports Group, Mitek and Traction Video. Qualcomm's naming rights "expired in June after 20 years and the company declined to submit a bid for an extension." The new name will be "valid through Dec. 31, 2018, when the city plans to close the stadium." If the facility remains open, SDCCU "could negotiate an extension with presumably an additional charge." The naming-rights bidding process "was handled" by Fox Sports VP & GM for SDSU Sports Properties Duke Little. Under the terms of the process, Fox will "receive $125,000 and the city the remaining $375,000" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/15).
