Golden Knights Get Approval To Trademark Name For Competition Purposes

The Golden Knights were "successful" in their appeal to have their name trademarked after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office "gave approval for the team to continue to use its name for identification and competition purposes," according to Steve Carp of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. However, it did "not grant the same approval for the team to protect its logo on its merchandise and sportswear." That trademark request is "suspended pending further appeal." But it "won’t prevent the team from using the logos in selling jerseys, hats and T-shirts." Golden Knights Owner Bill Foley said, "We got what we wanted. We’ve got ‘Golden Knights’ for hockey and we knew it would work out. We’re not worried about the other issue. That will work itself out in time. But we’re not paying anyone anything." The team does have the NHL’s brand "behind it, which means the Golden Knights’ team merchandise is protected under the league’s trademark banner." There is "nothing preventing the team from using and selling clothing with the Golden Knights’ team logo" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/10).

ROAD TRIPPIN': In Las Vegas, Jesse Granger notes Golden Knights players and coaches will "head on the road before the season even begins, visiting various cities in Idaho, Montana and Utah during the next two weeks." All of the areas are in the team's "authorized television distribution territory." Notably "missing from the list of stops is Las Vegas, which isn’t sitting too well with some fans on social media." The road trip falls in line with Foley’s "vision to make the Golden Knights, 'the team of the Rockies'" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 8/10).
