Steelers President Rooney Creates Hall Of Honor; First Class To Be Announced Aug. 29

Steelers President Art Rooney II yesterday announced that the team has "formed what it calls The Hall of Honor," according to Ed Bouchette of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. The Hall of Honor will "induct former players, coaches and front office personnel who were important to the franchise." It was Rooney's idea to honor Steelers greats, and he has been "working on developing it for a while." The inaugural class "will be revealed Aug. 29." There will be "a display for the Hall of Honor inside the FedEx Great Hall at Heinz Field." The Steelers eventually want to "expand the Great Hall to include The Hall of Honor as well as a museum and more but have been in a dispute with their Heinz Field landlord, the Pittsburgh-Allengheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority, over funding for it." Former players "must have been retired for three seasons" and "played for the Steelers for at least three seasons" to be eligible. Former coaches and contributers "must have made significant contributions to the team and community." Rooney, former Dir of Communications Joe Gordon, Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, longtime Pittsburgh broadcaster Stan Savran and former Dir of Media & Marketing Tony Quatrini will make up a selection committee that "will pick the inaugural class" (POST-GAZETTE.com, 8/1).
