Sources: Miami Businessman Jorge Mas Looking For Investors To Join Marlins Bid

Marlins bidder and MasTec co-Founder & Chair Jorge Mas is "looking for investors to join his bid" for the club, according to sources cited by Kosman & Atkinson of the N.Y. POST. Sources said that the decision by Mas to "seek outside money so he can assume less of the cost and risk himself follows weeks of due diligence whereby he got a close look at the books of the money-losing franchise." A source said that the Marlins could lose $70M this season. Sources added that Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria is presently seeking $1.2B, which is a 33% drop from his initial $1.8B asking price. A source added that Mas "unsuccessfully put pressure on Loria to enter into exclusive negotiations, perhaps so he could scare away other bidders and get the price lowered" (N.Y. POST, 7/27). In Miami, Nancy Dahlberg writes under the header, "How Marlins Bidder Jorge Mas Made His Money." A "die-hard sports fan," Mas is a "quietly strategic business power whose prowess has helped build a multibillion dollar company with a global reach, and an investor in next-generation companies hoping to make their mark." Mas has "helped at least one Miami technology startup get off the ground." A $1M seed investment by Mas in '13 "helped to launch SportsManias, a sports media company run by the mother and son team of Aymara Del Aguila and Vicente J. Fernandez." Mas has "continued to add to that investment." Mas Equity Partners "invested the majority" of a $3.5M financing round that followed in '14 and is an active investor and advisor to SportsMania today (MIAMI HERALD, 7/27).
