NFL Would Have Considered CBS Pulling Romo From "TNF," But Net Not Interested

The NFL would have "seriously considered" a request from CBS to limit Tony Romo to only Sunday NFL games in his debut season as the net's top analyst, according to sources cited by Bob Raissman of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. However, the net will put Romo on its "TNF" games as well as the top Sunday assignment. If NBC "could make a switch" with Mike Tirico calling "TNF" games in place of Al Michaels, it is likely CBS could have "told the league it would rather use" Dan Fouts, Rich Gannon or Phil Simms for its weekday games. Instead, it appears CBS is "even higher on Romo and is ready to roll with him in the booth" for all its prominent games. Relieving Romo of his "TNF" duties "may have negatively affected his confidence" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/4). NBC's Mike Florio said CBS "continues to set the bar unnecessarily high" for Romo. Florio: "The guy hasn't worked a game yet. How could you believe more in him two months later than you believed in him when you unceremoniously dumped Phil Simms and gave Romo his job? What has happened in the last two months that would cause you to think he would be better calling games when he hasn't called a game yet? ... You don't want to set the bar so high that the guy is only at best, if he's great, he's just going to satisfy the expectations you've created for him” (“PFT,” NBCSN, 6/5).
