People & Personalities: Bulls Radio Broadcaster An Influential Chicago Sports Voice

In Chicago, Phil Rosenthal notes Bulls radio broadcaster Chuck Swirsky's role in the "evolution of Chicago sports talk" is "often overlooked." Few "seem to even connect him to the format he re-energized." Sports talk "ultimately defined neither his first 15-year run in Chicago" -- mostly at WGN-AM -- nor the "last nine years in which he has called Bulls games." Rosenthal: "Maybe it's because his broadcast style ... is to focus primarily on what's before him rather than himself" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/14).

CASTING A SPELL? In DC, Thom Loverro writes the Wizards franchise "has a cloud of ingratitude hanging over it" as it enters the playoffs as the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. All indications are that Wizards broadcaster Phil Chenier "isn’t ready to be put out to pasture," but he has "accepted his demotion without protest." Monumental Sports & Entertainment Chair Ted Leonsis "may have his reasons" for taking Chenier off CSN Mid-Atlantic's Wizards coverage. But if a change is intended to "benefit your product, this is not the change you make, not now." Loverro writes Chenier is "still very good at his job" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 4/14).

FROM THE COURT TO THE BOOTH: In N.Y., Scott Cacciola notes former NBAer Matt Bonner has "quickly moved into a new role as a studio analyst for the Spurs' broadcasts," which are primarily on FS Southwest. Bonner, who "appears on the network’s pre- and postgame shows," received some "valuable pieces of advice." He said that an ESPN exec "told him that he needed to be his own worst critic." Bonner: "Because all you’re going to hear is: ‘You’re doing great! You’re doing awesome! You’re the best!’ And then, ‘You’re fired.’ Don’t drink the Kool-Aid" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/14).

THESE GUYS ARE GOOD: In Boston, Chad Finn lists his "Top 10 big-event play-by-play announcers." NBC's Al Michaels is an "easy choice for No. 1." Rounding out Finn's top five are Fox' Joe Buck (2), NBC Sports' Mike Emrick (3), NBC's Mike Tirico (4) and ESPN's Sean McDonough (5) (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/14).
