Georgia Tech AD Stansbury Discusses Hoops Success, Atlanta United, Future Apparel Deal

Georgia Tech AD Todd Stansbury in his eponymous podcast discussed a variety of topics, including the school's evolving relationship with Atlanta United FC as it houses the club during its debut MLS season, momentum for basketball ticket sales and the future of the school's branding and apparel deals. Both the men's and women's basketball teams at Tech reached the NIT finals, and Stansbury said of how the school will use the momentum, "One of the things we’re doing is we’re rolling out our renewals for season tickets basically now, this month, which is two months earlier than normal." Stansbury said Atlanta United playing at Bobby Dodd Stadium offers the school a “lot of advantages,” including a financial windfall and "learning so much just from an operational standpoint." He said of the soccer fans at the venue, “It’s obviously a different fan base that provides us with some real analytics and recon in how we might be able to reach some of those fans that may not normally be interested in coming to a college football game.” Stansbury added the association with the team allows them to see “some of the aspects of MLS soccer that could be incorporated into the gameday experience."

FUTURE PROSPECTS: Stansbury noted Tech has brought in outside consultants to examine how the athletic department operates and possible ways to improve, including what is the program's brand and "who are we, what’s our message, how do we differentiate ourselves from our competition.” Stansbury also discussed the school’s apparel deal, which is currently with Russell Athletic and runs through '17-18. He said the program in its next deal will be “looking for a partner that is really interested in being a partner, that they see Georgia Tech as being a valuable part of their intercollegiate initiatives and being an important property for them.” Apparel has become “incredibly important in intercollegiate athletics in recruiting, in telling your story." Stansbury also wants to ensure with any deal, “you’re putting your student-athletes in the best performance gear possible to give them the best opportunity to compete at the highest level" ("The Todd Stansbury Podcast," RAMBLINWRECK.com, 4/10).
