T'Wolves Unveil New Logo, Which Features New Colors But Similar Howling Wolf

The T'Wolves' evolution "took another step forward" last night as the team "revealed the new logo that will represent the franchise for years to come," according to Jace Frederick of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. Although the colors are "different -- the palette features midnight blue, lake blue, aurora green, frost white and moonlight grey -- the general image is familiar to fans." The logo features a wolf "howling at the North Star," which is "not much different from past renditions" of the team's logo. Frederick: "That’s kind of the point." The new identity was "meant to be an evolution, not a revolution." The look is "meant to represent the current team and the possibilities for its future, but also to honor the past." The logo is the "first piece in what will be a new identity" for the T'Wolves. New jersey and court designs will be "out this summer." It all "comes at a critical juncture in the franchise’s history." T'Wolves Senior VP/Marketing & Communications and CMO Ted Johnson said, "We just thought it’s the right time to turn a page to yet another chapter, a fresh start. And the logo and the identity is just part of the larger story" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 4/12).

HOWL AT THE MOON: The Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE notes the colors are a "nod to the original team colors" in '89. The howling wolf design is "similar to an alternate logo the team has used" since '08. The design was "introduced as part of a 4-minute video paying homage to the history of the franchise" (STARTRIBUNE.com, 4/12). In Minneapolis, Kent Youngblood reports Hattiesburg, Miss.-based RARE Design Founder & Creative Dir Rodney Richardson was the "creator" of the T'Wolves' new logo. Richardson and his firm are "changing the way the NBA looks, team by team." He and his firm "designed the new logo and identity" of the Grizzlies, Pelicans, Hawks and Kings (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/12).

LOOKING AHEAD: ESPN.com's Zach Lowe wrote the new logo is "part of a franchise overhaul designed to satisfy that urge for something new -- and show the commitment is real" (ESPN.com, 4/11). In Minneapolis, Patrick Reusse writes, "Combine the logo change with new uniforms and a completed remodeling of Target Center and, yes, it’s another Wolves reset." That is the "fourth in this decade" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/12). CBSSPORTS.com's Jack Maloney wrote the video unveiling the team's new logo was "extremely inspiring." Maloney: "I was pretty pumped up after this video ended." More Maloney: "I do like the new howling wolf as opposed to the snarling, angry one, and the colors are solid. I’m going to give the Wolves 8/10. It is a very nice new logo" (CBSSPORTS.com, 4/11).
