Chris Simms Walks Back Criticism Of CBS Over His Father's Broadcasting Relegation

A day after he called out CBS for its handling of his father's NFL broadcasting crew relegation, Bleacher Report's Chris Simms on Friday took to Twitter to walk back those comments. In a statement posted to his feed, Simms wrote, "I would like to set the record straight that I was not aware that Sean McManus had called my father’s agent, Steve Rosner, the day before the news broke to let him know that CBS was pursuing Tony Romo for the role of the lead color analyst for their NFL coverage. I’d like to apologize to CBS for this misunderstanding” (THE DAILY). McManus said he had a "long conversation" with Phil Simms last week and while they "didn't discuss specifically the (Romo) announcement" they did discuss a possible ongoing role with the net (SI.com, 4/9). Phil Simms last week said he is "not done" in relation to TV work. In N.Y., Gary Myers there are "many ways this could go." Simms "has not lost his fastball," so there "should be opportunities for him." He could go with an NFL studio roles on either Showtime or CBS, as Simms has "too much pride to slip into a backup role on CBS’ No. 2 team that is shown to only a fraction of the country." But Simms "would be excellent" on "The NFL Today" and it is a "lot less work than preparing for a Sunday game each week and a Thursday game once a week for half the season." Other possibilities include N.Y.-based WFAN-AM, Fox Sports and becoming a full-time "QB Teacher" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/8).

PRACTICE ROUNDS? SI.com's Deitsch wrote if CBS "wants to set its NFL broadcasting group up for the best possible long-term success, it would move the team of Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts into its No. 1 spot" and let Jim Nantz and Romo "handle the games usually assigned to the No. 2 crew." Eagle and Fouts are "currently the best NFL broadcasting team CBS has," and the net "isn’t going to lose a single viewer if Eagle and Fouts are doing its top game." Viewers are "coming for the teams and the matchup" (SI.com, 4/9).

ROLL OF THE DICE: In N.Y., Bob Raissman wrote hiring Romo is a "huge gamble." The risk is he will "fail miserably, embarrassing himself and CBS in the process." Not only would Romo be "out the door, but all who participated in the decision to hire him would have their reputations stained." In a TV world "built on perceptions, that is no small thing." Raissman: "It’s not a question of whether he can carry the load but how much time it will take him to adjust to it" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/9). NBC's Mike Tirico last week on "The Dan Patrick Show" said Romo's biggest hurdle his first year will be "where to look." Tirico: "As a quarterback, you know what you're doing. You're reading your keys. But are you looking for different things that are going to set up the next replay? How do you communicate what you're seeing, and make sure the production truck is seeing the same thing that you're seeing so the replay comes up? Because if you wait two, three, four seconds, you're not going to get the best replays to explain what happened on a play." Tirico said Romo is "smart, telegenic, well-spoken, knows how to handle the media." Tirico: "He'll do just fine" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 4/9). THE MMQB's Peter King writes he does not know if Romo will be a success, but he is a "different guy, a unique case." King: "Though I think Romo’s got a huge bridge to build to ever get to be Cris Collinsworth II, I’m not betting against him" (MMQB.SI.com, 4/10).
