Retiring NHL Kings Broadcaster Bob Miller Gets Proper Home Sendoff With Overtime Win

The NHL Kings’ OT win on Saturday "brought the same Hollywood can-you-believe-it quality and opportunity" for retiring announcer Bob Miller that Vin Scully "enjoyed with his game-winning extra-innings home-run call," according to Tom Hoffarth of the L.A. DAILY NEWS. As the Kings trailed 2-1 with 1:16 to play, all the fans in Staples Center "stood and clapped when prompted." Miller "stood as well and waved to the crowd as the final moments" on the FS West broadcast would be "contained in a small box within the broadcast screen." Seconds later, Kings RW Dustin Brown "scored to tie it up." Then, just a few moments into OT, Kings D Drew Doughty "put in the winner -- and Miller was not only coming out of his seat but thrusting his arms and fists into the air." Miller said, "It was perfect the way it happened. It was a great day." Miller said that it was a day that he will "remember for a very long time," but it  "was not as emotional for him as some may have thought." Miller: "It wasn’t a sad thing for me." Saturday was "framed as a wall-to-wall Bob Miller Appreciation Day, from a pregame festival outside Staples Center to a postgame jersey auction" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 4/9). Hoffarth notes yesterday's Kings-Ducks game was Miller's last call and he "showed the clean and simple broadcasting style as he did for the previous 44 years in the Kings’ broadcast booth." Miller "wrapped it up on live TV, without a script, and from the heart." In his farewell Miller said, "The end is here for me. So the only thing I have to say is good night and good bye" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 4/10).
