Audience Analysis: MLB Sees Strong National, Regional Figures For Opening Week

National and regional sports networks saw strong numbers for the opening week of the MLB season. ESPN drew 3.62 million viewers Sunday night for the Cardinals' 4-3 win over the Cubs on "SNB." FS1 for its MLB season opener on Wednesday night -- Yankees-Rays -- markrf the best opener yet for the cable net. Meanwhile, several RSNs hit multiyear highs for Opening Day. Across all RSNs, MLB openers were up 14% compared to last year. SNY drew a 4.7 local rating in N.Y. for Wednesday night's Braves-Mets game, which featured Braves P Bartolo Colon going up against his former team for the first time. Finally, FS Southeast earned a 3.3 local rating last Friday for the Yankees-Braves exhibition at SunTrust Park, marking the highest-rated Spring Training game for the net since '02.

SOUTHERN COMFORT: ESPN drew 3.827 million viewers Sunday night (6:00pm ET start) for South Carolina's win over Mississippi State in the NCAA Women's Tournament championship game. That number is up from 2.972 million viewers for UConn's blowout win over Syracuse last year, which aired on a Tuesday night. Sunday's game peaked at 5.34 million viewers from 8:00-8:15pm. Meanwhile, MSU's upset over UConn on Friday night drew 2.76 million viewers on ESPN2, marking the net's most-watched semifinal in four years.
