Sports Sites Again See Double-Digit Percentage Drop For Monthly Content Consumption

The digital sports media category in February extended its recent retreat in both audience size and consumption, according to monthly comScore data, as political developments continue to dominate the news landscape. The overall U.S. audience for digital sports media across online and mobile platforms fell to 177.4 million, down 3% from January and down 1% from February of last year. More striking, overall sports content consumption posted its second straight double-digit percentage decline, with an average time spent per user of 80 minutes during the month falling 15% from January and 18% from February ’16. ESPN led the category for the sixth straight month and for the 35th time in the last 36 months with a reach total of 73.77 million unique visitors. But that figure is the lowest to top the chart since July '15, and its average time spent of 53.4 minutes per user is also down 18% from both January and February '16.
