Bleacher Report Claims It Is Not Cutting Back Despite Laying Off 50 Employees

Bleacher Report laid off 50 people on Thursday, many of whom produced user-generated content that was a hallmark of the website before Turner bought it in ‘12, a source said. Politico’s Joe Pompeo first reported the layoffs this morning. In an email sent to employees Thursday, Bleacher Report co-Founder & CEO Dave Finocchio wrote, “There are a few areas we needed to address in order to eliminate redundancy. As a result, some of our colleagues will be parting ways with the company this week, as their positions no longer align with current organizational goals.” Finocchio’s email stressed that the layoffs were not a sign that Bleacher Report is cutting back, pointing out that it hired 170 people over that past year and currently has 45 open positions that it expects to fill. Turner has pledged to invest $100M in Bleacher through ‘19, Finocchio’s email said. “[We] will be bringing on additional resources over the remainder of the year to further fuel B/R’s growth. Many of these new roles will be in key areas such as content, product/engineering, marketing and sales.”
