Names In The News

Fox' MIKE PEREIRA writes in his forthcoming book that NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL "shoved him during a heated argument" about the '01 "Bottlegate" game, when referee TERRY MCAULAY stopped the game with 43 seconds left while Browns' fans threw bottles on the field. Pereira writes: "He gave me a hard shove into my door to try and continue the argument about McAulay in my office. Quite frankly, it startled me, and I think it startled him a little because the discussion ended shortly after that. ... By the way (Goodell) wasn't yet commissioner then. He was the executive vice president and chief operating officer." If Pereira's account is accurate, it is "troubling that Goodell would treat a subordinate in such a way -- and that he'd be rewarded with a promotion to commissioner five years later." Goodell "needs to explain his side of the story, and the NFL should explain whether the incident was investigated and whether Goodell was disciplined -- just as Goodell would demand indiscipline for any other employee who acted inappropriately" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 9/8).

GET TO THE CHOPPER!
Cowboys Owner JERRY JONES recently purchased a new helicopter. Jones "wouldn't say how much" he paid for his new ride, but the starting price for an H145 from Airbus Helicopters is $8.5M. The aircraft was "made to Jones' specifications" with the Cowboys blue star "stamped on the tail." The seats are "made of leather, and the floor is padded with carpet." The aircraft "hasn't been named -- yet." Jones said, "Let's not call this Jerry's Copter. There's gotta be another name" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/9).

THAT WOULD BE HUGE: Mavericks Owner MARK CUBAN on Friday denied rumors that he has been asked to help the CLINTON campaign by playing DONALD TRUMP during preparations for the upcoming Presidential debates. Cuban said, “It has never been brought up to me at all.” However, he added, “I would love to do it, I would love to help her” (“Morning Joe,” MSNBC, 9/9).

PICTURE THIS: Fox NFL analyst TROY AIKMAN has some "catching up to do on the list of most popular athletes on Instagram." Aikman has "weightier social media numbers Twitter (1.5 million followers) and Facebook (615,000, plus a private account), but he said he has particularity enjoyed the relatively straightforward world of Instagram." Aikman said that he "initially started two years ago to see what his girls," JORDAN, now 15, and ALLY, now 14, were up to. Aikman: "I got on it and then I thought, wow, this is kind of a cool little platform. I went from a private account to a public account and just decided, OK, I'll share a little bit of what's happening in my life for those that are interested" (NEWSDAY, 9/9).

NAMES: Packers coach MIKE MCCARTHY and the team on Thursday "donated a combined $200,000 to the new Green Bay Police Foundation." McCarthy: "We just want to be a part of the solutions to make our community better, and hopefully, we can be a light that other communities can learn from." McCarthy's father, Joe, "worked 38 years as a police officer and firefighter in Pittsburgh" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 9/9)....Actor KEVIN CONNOLLY “has joined the cast" of Fox’ new baseball drama “PITCH.” The show “follows a young female pitcher” who becomes the “first woman to play in the major leagues.” Connolly “will appear as a reoccurring guest star in a multiple episode arc as Charlie Graham," the fictional interim Padres President of Operations (EW.com, 9/7)....NBA free agent NORRIS COLE has signed with Bell Management Founder & President JOEL BELL for representation.
