Local businesses and reps of the six major Bay Area sports teams yesterday competed in the JOHN MADDEN & STEVE MARIUCCI Charity Bocce Tournament in Livermore, Calif. Mariucci said that the tournament, in its 18th year, has raised $5M for the Northern California Special Olympics, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Diabetes Youth Foundation, local high school football programs and the Mariucci Family Foundation. This was also the "first time" Madden "wasn't able to attend." Mariucci said that Madden "underwent hip replacement surgery last week and wasn't going to be able to get around" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/9).

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON? The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Brian Costa profiled Stanford golfer MAVERICK MCNEALY, "America's most highly rated professional golf prospect." But McNealy said that he is "seriously considering passing on pro golf for a career in business, a decision that would be virtually unparalleled in the modern world of big-money sports." The potential riches "offered by pro golf aren't as much of a draw for him." His father, SCOTT, co-founded Sun Microsystems, the Silicon Valley giant acquired by Oracle Corp. for $7.4B in '10. Scott McNealy also serves as an advisory board member for Sharks Sports & Entertainment. While Maverick McNealy said that he "intends to become financially independent, both he and his father view pro golf as something less than a higher calling." Scott McNealy, who played golf at Harvard, shares his son's "love of the game." But his "view of it as a professional endeavor is less than flattering." Scott McNealy: "The guy serving you food at a golf tournament is in so many ways doing more good and moving the capitalist ball forward than TIGER WOODS" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/7).

THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE: The Nova Scotia Sport HOF in '08 in downtown Halifax opened a "temporary exhibit devoted" to Penguins C SIDNEY CROSBY, but it "has been kept open ever since due to its popularity." Nova Scotia HOF CEO BILL ROBINSON said that "about 70,000 people walk through the doors every year." That will "likely only increase" if the Halifax-born Crosby wins his second Stanley Cup (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/9).

THE GREATEST: Among those who will serve as honorary pallbearers at MUHAMMAD ALI's funeral tomorrow include Boxing HOFers GEORGE FOREMAN, LARRY HOLMES and GEORGE CHUVALO, as well as photographer HOWARD BINGHAM (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 6/9)....The '01 biopic "ALI" starring WILL SMITH will "return to theaters this weekend." Sony President of Worldwide Distribution RORY BRUER in a statement said the film will be re-released to "a few hundred" locations nationwide (L.A. TIMES, 6/9).
