Sources: Rutgers' Best-Case Scenario For Game At Yankee Stadium Is To Break Even

Rutgers football will move a home game against Maryland in '17 to Yankee Stadium, though it "seems like breaking even for what Rutgers earns for a typical home game is a best-case scenario," according to sources cited by Dan Duggan of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. A source said there is a "potential for pretty good financial gain" by Rutgers. But Duggan wrote that "seems like an overly optimistic view after checking into the situation." There is "no huge payment from the Yankees like when Rutgers moved a home game against Army to MetLife Stadium" in '10. Sources said that Rutgers is "paying a modest fee ($70,000) and the Yankees will be on the hook for the ticket sales with Rutgers getting a percentage of the gate." Adding in the loss of revenue from concessions and parking and "considering the similar capacities of High Point Solutions Stadium and Yankee Stadium, it's difficult to see how this game could produce a financial gain for Rutgers," which makes approximately $1.6M per home game. While Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs technically could "back out of this agreement in principle," the cost of "creating a powerful enemy that hosts a Big Ten bowl game outweighs whatever money Rutgers may lose in this deal." A game against Maryland rather than a premier Big Ten opponent also "is the lesser of two evils." Duggan: "While I don't expect any more Rutgers home games to be moved to Yankee Stadium in the foreseeable future, I feel even more confident saying that a home game against a powerhouse like Michigan or Ohio State will remain on campus (barring an outrageous financial incentive)" (NJ.com, 6/7).
