Weekend Plans With The Players' Tribune's Maureen Cavanagh: Family, Movies, Football
Work often does not stop on the weekends for many in sports business, and Players’ Tribune Creative Dir MAUREEN CAVANAGH is not exception. Cavanagh spends a lot of time corresponding with her staff and director of photography in an effort to organize the following week's photo shoots of athletes that will be contributing. But any weekend work does not seem to phase her. Cavanagh: "I really love my job. I can’t believe that I get paid to do it. I would do it for free, but don't tell DEREK JETER that."
THE FORCE AWAKENS: I have four children -- ages 3, 6, 8 and 9 -- and a successful weekend for me is if we can make it through without having to go to urgent care for stitches. Every Friday night, we try to do movie night with the kids. We are currently working our way through the original "STAR WARS" trilogy. For people from our generation, it is fun to show kids the original.
WHAT’S BREWIN’: Every weekend starts off with large quantities of coffee. Then it is never-ending travel to sporting events for the kids. Right now, we are heavily into basketball. We try to keep the family together as much as possible. We have a cheering section for each kid, even if it is our youngest. She is attempting to play soccer.
WHEN IN ROME: We live on the Upper West Side of N.Y., which is not known for its restaurants. We are more of home bodies, but we love all of the good diners. Between my friends in sports and my husband’s artist friends, we try to have people over for dinner on weekends. Sometimes we will have a pretty eclectic gathering around the dinner table. There is always a lot of singing and wine drinking. The neighbors love us. I love to cook and I take my Caesar salad very seriously. It takes me like 45 minutes to perfect the dressing. If there was a Caesar salad competition, I would crush it.
FAMILY AFFAIR: When it gets cold, we like to get the kids out of the house. The Natural History Museum is right across the street from our apartment, or we will go to the Museum of Modern Art. We try with all of our might to get the kids out the door for church on Sundays. Sometimes we are so late that we only make the Spanish mass at 11:30am. We feel it is important to go even if we do not know what the priest is saying. We are a really close-knit Midwestern family, and try to go to my parents' house for Sunday night dinner with all of my siblings and their families. We also play a mean game of horse in my parents' driveway. My sister usually beats everybody.
LES HABITANTS: This weekend is the best NFL weekend of the year. We are going to be rooting for PEYTON MANNING all the way. My kids love the Knicks -- God help them. I also married a Canadian hockey fanatic and he DVRs every single Canadiens and Rangers game. He watches some games more than once like a crazy person. It is hard for me to explain how much I love fantasy sports. One of my favorite leagues that I am apart of is a long-standing baseball roto league with many of my former Sports Illustrated colleagues. I just love it.
