In S.F., Steve Rubenstein in a front-page piece reports NFL officials ahead of Super Bowl 50 "trust that the new grass being unrolled this week" at Levi’s Stadium "will not disgrace the locals the way the 49ers’ fields have become a green-colored black mark." Over the next few weeks, a little rain "is OK," but a lot of rain "isn’t." NFL Field Dir Ed Mangan said that he is "concerned with such things as the 'sand profile' of Levi’s Stadium and whether it’s up to the steady deluge predicted for the latter part of the week." If not, "tarps are ready." The field "must be ready for all the practices, for the halftime show and for all the pregame events." The players "get it last" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/12).

BUILDING DISTRICT: The Redskins plan on building a new stadium, and a WASHINGTON POST editorial states the "logical and obvious move" for the club would be to "return the team to its former home" in DC where RFK Stadium sits. With waterfront vistas that "can’t be beat, the site is centrally located with a Metro station and highways that connect it to the entire region." But if Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder "doesn't budge about changing the team’s name," a return to the RFK site is "unlikely." He will "say his stubbornness is all for the fans, and certainly some Washingtonians are deeply attached to the name, with no animus intended." But Snyder should "do what is right, both because it would serve fans’ interest to move the team back to its logical place -- and because, all things being equal, it’s good not to demean people" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/12).

WHAT'S IN A NAME? In Las Vegas, Ron Kantowski wrote T-Mobile Arena "just sounds like a sports arena in the corporate era," but what it "doesn't have yet is a nickname." It "won't be the T-M," because Las Vegas has "already got one of those." It has "a T&M -- Thomas & Mack Center -- with an ampersand, rather a hyphen." To have two iterations "would be confusing." Kantowski: "T-Mobe? Maybe. But T-Mobe sounds more like a one-hit wonder rock band from the 1970s" (REVIEWJOURNAL.com 1/9).

ROCK ON: Level 1 Motorsports co-Owner James Martin said that his group is "creating a new race series, the X-Cup Series," to race at Rockingham Speedway, which "will 'hopefully' start in April." Martin added that it would be "a 10-race series with eight events on the 1.017-mile track and two on the infield road course." He said that 15 drivers have "signed up to run, but halfway through the series he expects to be at full capacity with a field of 32." He said that admission to the events "will be affordable" (Richmond County DAILY JOURNAL, 1/9).
